Borgo le Vigne, Montecarlo (Lucca)

Happy days in a former winery on the vine clad hills of Tuscany

In Italian, a borgo is a hamlet or small village. Borgo le Vigne is named after the vineyards that it sits amongst and for which it was the winery. Some of the dwellings now in this borgo are owned by Italians from Lucca as a weekend retreat to the hills and views. Montecarlo is one of the select vineyard areas, like Chianti, that the Italians restrict to agriculture.

The external treatment of the renovated borgo had closely to match the appearance of the original buildings. The Buonamico winery now has a building behind trees just across the road; and happily sells by the case or the bottle.

The Castle
The castle - Rocca Del Cerralglio was built in the 12th century. Together with another castle at Vivianna, it formed a defensive position on the ridge of hills. They could see approaching armies from Pisa or from Florence. From it, Castruccino Castracani marshalled his army to win the battle of Altopascio in 1325. It was enlarged in the 16th Century, but some of it has subsided since then. It has been privately occupied since 1700. The family continue with the restoration and open it, and its museum of medieval life, to visitors on some Summer Saturdays and occasional days in summer;
…It rather depends on who in the family is in that day.
